INTERVIEW YVONNE INTERVIEW THOMAS Weather-forecast for Saturday as heared from a very hawaii-experienced windsurfer (I can´t say any names as he is pretty famous in the triathlon-community) will be wind between middle and strong on a scale from mild to very strong. So we will have some proper conditions for here. In the next days there will be no news as I will be in the mental preparation. And I will follow a dear hobby: cooking (and eating well). Mediainfos on the race: HERE! |

Yesterday evening our Trainer Mario Huys, his wife Sabine and their small daughter Tabea arrived. The three were pretty tired but were not able to sleep right away. We went to our beds immediately as we are already in recovery-mode. Today small Tabea coloured my small finger-nail Pink to make it fit to hers. No I have a little luck-bringer, anyway some may look at me pretty funny when they see that ;-). It is getting tighter and more hectically here. But we stay away from the hype and fit in the media-work that has to be done (and the one we want to do). I saw Dr. Chieko Maekawa a few times and she could teach me a lot about my injury and the cause. And also how I can handle it in the race… I don´t have to run a lot aynway right now, therefore we can enjoy our nice rental car: the Ford MUSTANG Convertible. |

A thousand times and more the picture left has been shot from this view. Fascination for every serious triathlete. The Kona Bay with its pier is swim-start and finish as well as transition area for the Ironman World Championship and will maybe rise the pulse about 20 beats of the average athlete when he looks at it. It is just beautiful there when you head out for a swim at 7 o´clock in the morning, at least right now, before most of the 1812 competitors from around 50 nations will invade Kona on Friday. We enjoyed the swim of the whole course and as a reward we got visited by a Green Turtle at the swim exit, and later on a Chai Tea Soy at Lava Java. Today my mentor and our massage therapist Lenny and his friend Dennis will arrive (he is at least the best for us). Lenny lives on Kauai, the far west Hawaiian island, comes originally from Georgia where he was the therapist of the Coca Cola-family and of a guy called Michael Stipe, singer of R.E.M. The band is from Athens/Georgia just like Lenny. |

Today it was the last hard ride through the fields to Hawaiia and back. On the way I had to help Sandra Wallenhorst, who flated without having spare with her. QueenK-highway is pretty dirty on the shoulders and so it is recommended to carry half of a bike-shop for a 100km plus. Other things changed as well like the weather. Nearly every day it starts with a blue sky, around noon clouds and "VOG" (volcanic emission of the Kilauea) start to accumulate at the slopes of Hualalai behind us. Therefore sometimes pretty hard tropical rainshowers can go down unexpected. Frequent rain has been an unknown thing here on the Big Island around Kailua-Kona. But why should the climate-change in front of the doors of paradise...? |

After we organised everything like plenty of food/drinks and found our rythm (which was not a big deal in our beautiful house on the slopes of Hualalai), I just had to overcome the rebellic phase of my nerve as it did hurt a lot which might have been caused by climate and air pressure-change as well as the the travel in the plane. On Sunday it was time to visit the lava-fields for a longer and enganged ride. It was really fun riding it with Yvonne and giving her instructions and knowledge about the different parts that might be important as I knew that this might be tips that could change the outcome of the most important race in our sport in women´s. I think we did a good job with a 36km/h average over 155km including Hawi. For me there will be only one factor that´ll limit me: the nerve on my left leg. Questionmark will be how he will take the swim and the hard bike..and then we will see on the run.Yvonne is in excellent shape, I have never ever seen her running and biking like this, and her swim is on great niveau as well thanks to Tim Thornton (and she did overcome the shoulder-injury which gave her so much trouble at the World´s in Almere). If I say this you have to be aware that she broke the world record this year on the "iron"-distance. For that you have to have something...but now it looks that she is even stronger! |

we also had the chance to visit the US-division of our bike-sponsor VELTEC (Yvonne´s main sponsor) in Carson City. We had endless fun to be with the great people there. They sent us on the way with nice goodies like brand new SIDI-shoes, Enervit nutrition and many interesting technical inputs by Soren Krebs who is the bike-guru at Veltec Sports (www.veltecsport.com). Thank you guys, we will come back, it was great...;-) |

Silicone Valley, the Mekka of computer- technology, ist also home of Doug and Petra Rainbolt. The great thing about those two very nice people is: the are both passionate triathletes, Petra is from the Netherlands, Doug is the marketing-manager of ALACRITECH, with great realtions to other big companies around San Jose. We had the chance to visit the two and we had just a great time together. I had decided to do a half-ironman-distance to get an idea if the Ironman Hawaii would be realistic after my injury. The BIG KAHUNA TRIATHLON in Santa Cruzu is a great race and I signed up just shortly. Further we just had signed a new contract with ALACRITECH. So I raced without big expectations, got of the bike leading after having the fastest bike-split and could manage, with limited training miles in running, to finish 6.overall. So the decision for Kona was clear. Even it meant later on a lot of back-pain and sometimes doubts during the further preparations. On monday we shot a commercial for Alacritech in which Doug and me were allowed to play roles in. Yvonne cracks us on the bike, a fate tht might happen to some other male athletes this year in Kona as I look on Yvonnes shape right now ;-). On Tuesday it was time to move to South Lake Tahoe, about 4 hours away and on 7000 feet elevation. Thin air promised...but that was the plan...houghhoughhough... |
